Anatheras - Under the Citadel

Like all the other legendary citadels, Anatheras was built on top of a vast older city that was abandoned during the great wars that led to the Age of the Fall.

These cities were huge complexes, and often could be compared only with industrial hives with many layers containing a mix of habitats and industrial sites. A separate power grid was installed on the citadels, much more advanced and superior to the redundant old technologies that were swiftly abandoned.

Only a few names remain of the old cities that now lie buried deep within the hollow bowels of Anatheras, and yet millions of souls have found home there, able to dwell beyond the immediate rule of Akronas and the Hexad.

Anathon, Aedras, Aethra, and Adraca were only a few of those names - none of them verified. And yet, thousands of small settlements still persist, having developed their own laws and means of survival. Many survive due to part of the old power grid still functioning thanks to huge solar panels that are miraculously still working after hundreds of years.

The settlements under Anatheras are grossly divided into nine sectors. Eight peripheral sectors and a central one. These sectors retain their original designations when the citadel was first being built.

1. Sector Core: This is the least populated sector under Anatheras. A lot of engines and ancient factories remain still under control of the Hexad. This is the only underground sector where the Hexad still maintains a token force of clergy and other maintenance personnel. The rest of the citadel underground was abandoned long ago. The few people that are not clergy and maintenance personnel, that survive in Sector Core do so by being constantly on the move, and by raiding either the citadel clergy, or the nearest surrounding settlements. Some of the most powerful gangs retain a loose coalition establishing what small semblance of order they need to keep raiding.

2. Sector Cella: The eastern sector. Vast, scarcely populared areas, contain a lot of abandoned large industrial buildings. Few animals and beasts survive here as well, apparently due to toxic fallout in the past. Several large abhuman tribes are known to roam these areas, but they maintain very few permanent settlements.

3. Sector Carcer: The Northeastern sector. Densely populated regions with a lot of settlements in a close distance one from the other. Most of this sector somehow managed to maintain permanent access to the power grid. However, the old powerplants are controlled by powerful overlords who terrorize most of the population, raising disproportionate levies for their "services". Some small pockets are trying to organize a resistance scheme, but haven't achieved much so far.

4. Sector Calix: The Northern sector. Humid and partially flooded. Salt flats with a few industrial and habitable settlements. Most of the sector is dominated by abhumans or raiding gangs.

5. Sector Hyalus: The Northwestern sector. Moderately populated settlements from much older eras. This place used to be abandoned or slums when Anatheras was built. The settlements maintain access to solar-powered energy. The influx of energy with daylight and the lack thereof by nightfall is also useful for tracking time underground - among other things. Besides the settlements a lot of underground forests along with salt rivers and streams exist in this sector. There are various kinds of underground plant and animal life to be found in Anatheras, certainly much more than would be expected, and Hyalus is a great example of the biodiversity that can be encountered in the citadel underground.

6. Sector Civis: The Western sector. A little more densely populated settlements are found here, along with several forested areas and other interesting sites. Sadly a powerful gang of infernalists have begun to spread in this sector, bringing havoc and ruination with their passage. Already they have torched the settlements of Yrissa, Alambris and Kallan, and are spreading like wildfire. In this sector, under the ruins of Deira is one of the rumored locations of the mystical city of Acheron.

7. Sector Iraes: The Southwestern sector. This is a hotly contested zone. Huge gangs of varying characteristics have turned this sector into their battleground. Several large abhuman tribes also play their part. What few settlements persist are hidden well, and live in total fear.

8. Sector Alax: The Southern sector. Probably the best and most powerful settlements are found in this sector. There is abundant access to fairly recent technology, and decent access to solar-powered energy. A lot of abandoned famous buildings and old historical sites from the ancient days are found here. The settlements in the sector's center have fortified themselves heavily and are trying to seize control of the entire sector and lead the underground resistance, but it proves to be much harder than that, a lot of spies, criminals and gangers have a vested interest in the failure of the rise of Sector Alax, and are trying real hard to undermine the sector's efforts to rise.
