Empyrean Lore - Caldonnas In Chains

The greatest champion in all the legends of the Unfolding Dream was Caldonnas - the champion of dreams. He was the first of the Elu to stand steadfast against the horrors of the abyss, and against the depravity of Ulaheron, the Shadow God.

Every demon, every devil, every creature of darkness and shadow trembles at the approach of Caldonnas, for his was the Ire of Akaon, the great maker - and unmaker - of dreams. Such was the power and valor of Caldonnas when he led the shining host of the Shanacan, that all darkness hid from the face of the dream, for they dreaded the fire of their unmaking that burned in the hearts of these stalwart warriors.

But for all his power and glory, greater still was Caldonnas' punishment. The Vaenu, the deities of Fate feared the rise of Caldonnas and the Shanacan. They had become an unstoppable force, and wherever they went all horror and darkness was undone, scorched in their all-purging fire.

The cosmic balance was disturbed. The Vaenu, always eager to control the myriad strands of Fate, feared the power of the lord of the shining host, and thus, they sought to capture and contain him along with his mighty warriors. Rather than cause war to break out between the Shanacan and the Vaenu, Caldonnas surrendered, under condition that the Shanacan were left to continue their sacred task.

The terrible and heartless Dread Wardens of the Vaenu, led Caldonnas at the edge of the cosmos, in a place called the Anvil of Fate. Therein they chained him against the unbreakable rock of the mountains of Ever-night, and issued forth the most terrible punishment in the entire dream.

All the Dreams and Hopes that were never meant to be were led to the Anvil of Fate, were they were crushed into stardust, and ultimately became part of the endless cycle of death and rebirth of the dream. As for Caldonnas - he was made to watch the devastation of broken dreams for countless millennia.

So what is "Empyrean"? Empyrean derives from the Medieval Latin empyreus, an adaptation of the Ancient Greek ἔμπυρος empyrus "in or on the fire", which when ascribed to a person describes someone who is "of fire" or "contains fire". Empyrean has been used in ancient and medieval times to describe the higher realms of heaven where everything is divine fire. In our context, an Empyrean (sometimes also referred to as an "Incarnate") is an Aethon who has incarnated as a human. Therefore in that context we are actually talking about empyrean humans, but that is needless semantics. So what is an Aethon, then? The word Aethon is also ancient greek in origin.
